Here are two images of the major winter storm engulfing the United Sates, captured by the joint NOAA/NASA GOES Project. This storm system is occurring at the same time Severe Tropical Cyclone Yasi is bearing down on the Australian coastline.
The massive winter storm is expected to reach from the Colorado Rockies to New England, affecting up to 100 million people. From the images, this storm system appears to be as large as a third of the Continental U.S. These images were captured on Jan. 31, 2011. The storm is expected to peak on Feb. 1.
NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center says it expects heavy snowfall in parts of northern Iowa, southern Minnesota and Wisconsin. Snowfall from the system extends from Michigan west to Montana, Idaho, Utah and Arizona. A mix of rain and snow also stretches into the Ohio and Tennessee valleys, and it is all moving east.
