China is aiming to make 1 million electric vehicles a year by 2015, according to the government published People’s Daily.

Apparently, new plans for the Chinese auto industry are about to be published. Electric and hybrid electric vehicles, or “new energy” vehicles, are going to become a national priority.

The nation’s longer term aim is said to be to make 100 million new electric cars and buses each year by 2020, quite a leap from 1 million a year just 5 years earlier, in 2015.

This news comes less than a month after the announcement of the Obama Admisistration’s stated aim of getting to 1 million electric vehicles on US roads by 2015. Obama voiced the intention in his recent State of the Union address.

China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology has said it will invest more than 100 billion yuan over the next 10 years to increase “new energy” vehicle production. China wants to be the world’s largest electric vehicle production country.
