Dr Seuss’ ‘The Lorax’ Gets A Hollywood Butchering [Video]

The Lorax

The title of this post says it all really. Well at least that’s what I think of this preview of this Hollywood adaptation of the classic Dr Seuss book, The Lorax.  No, I haven’t seen the whole movie yet, but I don’t need to. I can tell just from the preview! Sadly, there’s not much fans of the book will recognize here. Sometimes that’s a good thing. Not here.

All I can say is that I hope some semblance of the original story is left intact. Then again, perhaps those who don’t know the book will find it entertaining at least. No doubt the environmental message is still there to some degree.

I won’t go on about it further. David Roberts over at Grist has already had an extensive rant about it, and there’s not much more I can add to that!

Instead, I’ll ask: if you are a fan of Dr Seuss books, what do you think of this? Am I being too harsh? Check out the preview below:

Perhaps you haven’t seen many of the Dr Seuss film adaptions but in general they are trying to make a 90+min movie out of 1000 word kids book. They have to bolt on more of a story about the general theme/story of the book. I can see the story in there, especially in a 150sec clip. The graphics look great! I can definitely see me and the kids going to this one!

I just think the whole style and approach is not in keeping with Dr Seuss. Wise-cracking prankster Lorax? Nah. But that’s just me.

Prankster? Which bits suggested that? Wise cracking, yeah. He was a hermit/curmudgeon at the point of telling the story.
